As the global health crisis came to American shores, students were getting ready to return to school. As summer concluded, it became apparent that most schools would not reopen and teachers scrambled to adjust their curriculums to optimize online classrooms' learning outcomes. And to teachers’ credit, these efforts have been largely successful. Some experts feel that the lessons learned during this transition can be applied to the business world as well, ensuring online training is as effective as it can be. First, learning approaches should pivot from lectures to dialogue-based techniques. Distance learning students reliably rate listening to lectures as their least-favorite learning methodologies, and professional trainees are no different. Adopt small class sizes and interaction to make learning more meaningful in digital spaces. Additionally, be mindful of time. Marathon sessions are rarely successful because people’s attention wanders to other things as class drones on. Keep it short and keep it engaging. Finally, assess often. Ask learners how they are doing, what they are struggling with, what they enjoy, and what could be done better. These assessments can be formal or informal, but the information gathered should be actionable and, ultimately, acted upon.
