Training Unicorns

Saturday, October 3, 2020

There are many reasons an employee might leave a job. Their management might be ineffectual. They might feel unheard or disrespected. Their contributions may not be recognized. These terminal factors play into a workplace’s overall culture, and to build a workplace where employees don’t feel this way, managers need to be intentional. One of the ways to do that is through a robust training and development program. A common desire among the leaders of growing businesses is that their next hire is a “unicorn” employee—one that has an elusive mix of innate, hard-to-cultivate qualities that will make them perfect for their organization and help the company grow. Wishing for that employee to walk through the conference room doors is fine, but smart leaders are more proactive. By developing cultures of learning, they can train their existing workforce to become those “unicorn” employees. To get there, training needs to focus on effective communication and conflict resolution strategies, skill-building that’s aligned to individual employees’ career plans, putting shared corporate principles into practice, and leadership development focusing on establishing trust and building rapport.
